How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?
My real name is Derek w e e m s. Prince is my ex-girlfriend’s maiden name. lol her last name.
I had to use her last name in place of my last name, one time to sneak into a gym club in order to work out. because I didn’t have membership so I had to obtain a membership in her name using her credentials as opposed to using my last name and that’s how I adopted that name! lol I just Incorporated it with my real name as a middle name Prince so thereby getting Derek Prince Weems.
I had always wondered why I never had a middle name my mother didn’t give me the middle name my father didn’t give me a middle name and I always wanted a middle name anyway. My brother had a middle name. My youngest brother. Sean Lamar w e e m s.
But my name was just plain old Derek w e e m s. So that provided me with the perfect opportunity! That one experience provided me with a perfect opportunity! And I always looked at her last name as a pretty nice sounding last name! I thought it was a great last name for anybody to have! Or a great name for anybody to have. So that’s how I adapted the name as opposed to my real name Derek w e e m s or my stage name which was lyrics. Early on in my career in the early 90s when I first started .
Also at extreme was another name at Once Upon a Time in my career that I used.

Promote the kingdom of God and the Excellence of the kingdom of God through everything that we do even in our real lives as well as through the music industry and given the kids much better future than we had in the eighties and nineties! And hopefully eventually everybody will join along creating a heaven on Earth for everything and everybody! That’s about it my friend. Having fun along the way! Tons of fun! However the group that I last performed with my old group the name is Black Folk that was my most joyable an inspirational experiences speaking into the lives of our people on stage and on record. Speaking positive influence into the lives mind bodies and Souls of people. It’s a fabulous song!
What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?
Finding people to collab. Finding people to work with that are on the same page. Learning the game. Learning everything it is about the game in terms of promotion promoting your music and getting royalties for your creations. Things are looking a lot better these days however
Whatβs Your Typical Songwriting Process?
I try not to write anymore I try to just freestyle even though I’m not the greatest at it I try not to write anymore. However my typical songwriting process is usually to find an extraordinary emotional beat similar to Dear Mama something emotional that moves my soul where the lyrics just pour out efforts effortlessly.
And I just brainstorm and right until I have three 16 bar versus. Or however many versus I need.
Then out I’ll try to come up with a hook. If I cannot come up with a hook I’ll read through my verses and pick a couple of sentences the hottest sentences out of the verses and somehow turn them into a hook for the song If I don’t already have one.
How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?
Being able to share my music with all of my people that I’ve met in Atlanta and grew up with in Cleveland and fans across the globe. As well as received the love and the feedback and the constructive criticism that’s always needed and welcomed. or at least it should be.

Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?
I started off with Donald passman’s book I think it was called how to write. He had another book also this business called music both of them both of those were very informative and influential for me in my early years in my early stages in my early twenties. Put God first in any and everything you do! Everything else will follow! All your dreams hopes desires your deepest desires and your needs will follow and be met! That’s the best I can give you right there. It gets no better than that! Long story short family.
What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?
The lyrics the profanity for number one in the music I assume. So that everybody can listen to it and hear your work your original work on the radio and enjoy it with their family and grandchildren and children. The promotion of Destruction of life in any form and decadence I would show an influence the minds of other people on how we can still have fun rapping as well as emceeing and make money. God willing.
How Do You Feel About Originality?
That’s what I strive for. I love it. That’s what I strive for in every aspect of my life. Although I try to model myself after people such as my father my parents my uncles my cousins prominent religious leaders that I was fond of and I’m fond of such as Farrakhan Bishop TD Jakes Malcolm X doctor Malachi York Jesus so on and so forth. Elijah Muhammad. And of course the most high God! who has given them all as well as myself, their power of influence.
