Singer-songwriter, Dyana Cannon New York to Philly. Soft rock with melodic themes. Influences: 1970’s AC music and bands, singer-songwriters. Whatever happened to the local singer-songwriters-with-band teams who were not famous, yet had some of the best music you’ve ever heard. That would describe a Dyana Cannon experience. Let’s say she is like a “Natalie Merchant meets Anne Murray but with a rock-band.” Or how about “The Carpenters meets the Eagles mixed with a flare of country-jazz?” Starting with a nighttime dream, as a teen Dyana heard the “most beautiful song [she] ever heard” and asked the piano-man in the dream “who wrote it” and he replied “YOU did, you want to learn it?” This began Dyana Cannon’s lifelong song-writing journey of creating stories about love and anguish with some songs also serving as “musical-medicine” throughout her life. Dyana Cannon sang as lead singer and songwriter for bands Beautiful Strange of Old Forge, NY and Knowlton Point of Philadelphia over the course of 2 decades. Currently she is recording her 7th CD with Earl Wilt of Jamland Studio for her upcoming seven-song CD to be titled “Johny.” It features her and her new songs along with Earl Wilt, Steve Politowski, and Dustin Samples. Songs are recorded, displayed on YouTube as they are gathered, finetuned and then submitted to CDBaby for publication (BMI) and distrubution. One of the upcoming songs depicts her encouraging words to Ukrainians to “go take [their] glory”in support of their defense against Russia.
dyana cannon,
What Musical Genre Do You Feel Best Describes Your Music And How Would You Describe Your Sound?
Singer-songwriter, Adult-contemporary, Soft rock, blues-jazz-country mix
How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?
My mother liked the name of the actress DYAN Cannon but she added an “A” to the name.
Subsequently, years later I ultimately ended up marrying a “Cannon,” and with this I am now
Dyana (with the A at the end) Cannon.
What Are or Have Been Your Musical Influences?
I love the 70’s music with their melodic feel and focus on a repeat cycle of the theme. Honestly, Led Zeplin, Eagles, Kansas, Journey, Fleetwood Mac and other well know bands were enjoyed thoroughly.
I love the singer-songwriter-with-a-band scene and experienced this myself when I played with Beautiful Strange (in Old Forge, NY) and Knowlton Point (in Philadelphia, PA). I also love a lot of old Christian music/artists such as Andrae Crouch and Keith Green.
What Are You Working On Now? Any Future Collaborations We Can Look Forward To?
I work primarily with local musicians with Earl Wilt who is the owner and producer at Jamland Studios in Delaware.
What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry? What Is Your Plan Of Action?
I would like to have my songs used for commercials, TV shows, movies, and/or radio play.
What Is Your Favorite Track To Perform Live and Why?
I love performing Hold me Closer Now and Going Home because they put me in a melodic groove or soothing meditative-trance.
What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?
Money. The funds to keep recording.
What’s Your Typical Songwriting Process?
I typically dream up many of the songs. Tunes with themes are then recorded on my cell (voice memo) then I work on each as a unique song throughout the days/weeks, etc. I like to add words based on what fits the words that were dreamt up with the song, what words describe the “feel” of the song and which lyrics phonetically fit.
How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?
Social media has been good with promoting my older songs and music to the people who “knew me when” … before I moved down to Philadelphia. It has been useful with keeping a trail of my song-life-path as it has been, up to today; kind of like a book with chapters.
What Are Some Tracks and Artists Currently On Your Playlist?
Recently I have proudly been working with drummer Steve Politowski and bassist Dustin Samples, both local phenomenal musicians having their own successful music lives- with reason.
What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?
I started “making music” young (as a young teen) and continued throughout my life. During this/that time I lived life; went to college, played in bands, married (twice), had 2 kids, taught/teach French, and work/ed as a Nurse.
Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?
Keep doing you; your talent and interests and be kind to one another.
What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?
I would stop putting music on the radio just because someone is paying to play it.
Put music on that people want to hear, maybe by listening to your playlist first…
How Do You Feel About Originality?
I love originality and a good song is a good song any genre.
Is There Anything Else We Should Know About You Or That You Would Like to Add?
All talent is a gift from God for us to enjoy and share with others. It should therefore be good and therapeutic, not harmful.
