Justin Sexton,

What Musical Genre Do You Feel Best Describes Your Music And How Would You Describe Your Sound?
Country is definitely my genre but a blend of blues, jazz, Americana with country at the root might be a description of what I do.

How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?
Well, it’s my actual name, not a stage name. Mom n dad I guess. I used to hate it and begged my mom from age 6 to 9 to let me change my name from Justin to Beach Boys Sexton. I didn’t win that battle. Still not sure if I shouldn’t change it. Lol

What Are or Have Been Your Musical Influences?
Well, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, and Nirvana were big influences early on but so were guns n roses, Travis Tritt, Garth Brooks, and Brooks n Dunn….Maria was such a cool song

What Are You Working On Now? Any Future Collaborations We Can Look Forward To?
Lots of writing for a few great folks in L.A. that have been producing my album this year. Wrote one for a movie as well, some excellent producers commissioned me to write. Tons of stuff on the to-do list this year.

What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry? What Is Your Plan Of Action?
My goal is to be a working artist/writer and write a few hits. I love writing, so just working in the industry as a job would be an accomplishment. Plan of action, well I’ve been told it takes 15 years to make an overnight success, so I’m 5 years late but closing in fast

What Is Your Favorite Track To Perform Live and Why?
Oh goodness…Poured Drinks, Gypsy Wind, and My Baby Left Me At Bass Pro…that one gets some laughs and I have fun period. I just love it all.

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?
The biggest challenge in this career path is mental. Doing your best work even if no one is listening or even supportive can be mentally and emotionally challenging, but usually pen and paper are within arms reach and those emotions become your assistant in the writing room

What’s Your Typical Songwriting Process?
I have so many methods. It really depends. My best stuff usually comes from mowing the yard. The droning sound of that Bb 4 stroke Briggs and Stratton motor causes all the 3rds, 5ths and 7ths to bounce around in my head, then a rhythm, then words. Happens literally every time I hear a note hold for longer than 15 seconds. Other than that, I use the Nashville method.

How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?
It hasn’t yet. I’m still so unheard of by most.

What Are Some Tracks and Artists Currently On Your Playlist?
Blake Shelton, Morgan Wallen, and of course anything Chris Stapleton

What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?
I’ve been holding and playing instruments my entire life, but I’ve been in large commercial construction for years as a “real job”

Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?
Be authentic and do what makes you happy and practice your craft.

What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?
I would bring real country back into the mainstream. So many great stories in country music

How Do You Feel About Originality?
Music with no originality is done everyday and never heard because it sounds like something that already exists. Originality is paramount in an industry that is based on finding something new and fresh.

Is There Anything Else We Should Know About You Or That You Would Like to Add?
I was a scholarship drummer in college the first time and if it has strings,I’ve played it. I’m self taught on guitar. NSAI MEMBER. ISSA MEMBER. BMI WRITER.
